The JAKESTRONG 5K is a local grass-roots fundraising event that started in May, 2011 after Jacob (Jake) Carlino, a 12 year old boy at the time, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. As Jake continues to courageously fight his battle with cancer, his positive outlook and bravery continue to touch all those that he comes in contact with. It is his wish, and possibly someday, his own mission that all of us can help put an end to this awful disease and prevent other children from walking this path of hardship. Our goal is to raise over $1 million for pediatric cancer research and to date we have raised over $80,000+! The JAKESTRONG name itself signifies one boy’s mission to involve local communities to help make a difference for all children fighting cancer by building awareness and raising the much needed funds for pediatric cancer research.
What Drives Us
Each year in the U.S. there are approximately 13,500 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are diagnosed with cancer. About 1 in 300 boys and 1 in 333 girls will develop cancer before their 20th birthday. Given that childhood cancer is only 1% of all the cancers out there, it is no surprise that there is not enough attention given to finding better treatments, earlier detection and prevention, as well as cures for this awful disease. For anyone who has ever unfortunately witnessed a child going through vigorous chemotherapy treatments, you can certainly understand the impact and complications that each child goes through once diagnosed with cancer.
The Race Event
On Saturday, August 13th, 2016 we will be holding our 6th annual JAKESTRONG 5k & Kids Fun Run event. This event is both a fundraiser and a celebration for all of our Champion Survivors who we honor each year the day of the race. The event is fun for the entire family, the young, the elder and everyone in between. To see more information about this event and to register, please visit jakestrong.org/raceinfo.
